About Matthew Raphael Johnson

Matt is originally from Union County, New Jersey. He took his master’s degree from the University of Missouri, writing his thesis on social alienation in the works of Hegel and Nietzsche. He went on to complete his PhD at the University of Nebraska, writing his dissertation on Michael Oakeshott’s critique of modernity. His first job out of college was working with the Barnes Review. He has recently left his job teaching history at Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmetsville, MD and is now an independent writer and priest of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Matt has written numerous articles, which can be found on his Web site, He is also author of several books, including: Lectures on Medieval Russia, Ethnicity, State, and Utopia, The Manifestation of Holiness, Selected Essays on Russian Literature, and The Third Rome: Holy Russia, Tsarism, and Orthodoxy.
