HARTFORD, Conn. ??? Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman took another step Tuesday toward mending his relationship with Democrats, saying that Barack Obama’s actions since winning the presidency have been “just about perfect.”
“Everything that President-elect Obama has done since election night has been just about perfect, both in terms of a tone and also in terms of the strength of the names that have either been announced or are being discussed to fill his administration,” Lieberman said during a visit to Hartford.
Lieberman, the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000, was re-elected to the Senate in 2006 as an independent but continues to caucus with Democrats. He supported Republican John McCain’s presidential campaign, going as far as to criticize Obama and make a speech at the Republican National Convention.
Democrats threatened to strip him of his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee but instead removed him as head of a smaller environmental committee.
Connecticut Democrats meet Dec. 17 and are still considering a possible censure of Lieberman for his actions during the presidential campaign.
“I will ask them to judge me by my record,” Lieberman said. “Generally speaking, I’ve had a record, a voting record, which is really ultimately what it’s about, not unlike most Democrats.”
Lieberman said he believes the rift between himself and the party stemmed mainly from his support of President Bush’s policy in Iraq and will close as that becomes less of an issue.
“It appears to me that the war in Iraq is coming to a successful ??? I don’t want to say conclusion yet, but it’s moving in a way that it will not be a divisive issue either in the Democratic Party or between Democrats and Republicans in the time ahead,” Lieberman said. “And therefore, I think we’ll return to more normal times, which I welcome.”

The Federal Reserve said Tuesday it will buy up to $600 billion in mortgage-backed assets in another attempt to deal with the financial crisis.
The Fed said it will purchase up to $100 billion in direct obligations from mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well as the Federal Home Loan Banks. It also will purchase another $500 billion in mortgage-backed securities, pools of mortgages that are bundled together and sold to investors.
The $600 billion effort on mortgages came as the Fed also unveiled a new program to help unfreeze the market that backs consumer debt such as credit cards, auto loans and student loans.
The program on consumer debt will lend up to $200 billion to the holders of securities backed by various types of consumer loans. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson had said recently that the government was working on the new program, which will be supported by $20 billion of credit protection provided by the $700 billion bailout fund.
The Fed said that the $600 billion effort to support the mortgage market was being taken to reduce the cost of home mortgages and increase their availability. It said the purchases of the mortgages and mortgage-backed securities would take place over a number of months.
The severe financial crisis that is rocking global markets at the moment began more than a year ago with rising defaults on subprime mortgages, loans provided to borrowers with weak credit histories.
The billions of dollars of losses financial institutions have suffered on their mortgage loans have caused banks to stop making new loans of various types, which almost certainly has helped push the country into a deep recession.

VoR radio host Peter Schaenk returns Wednesday, November 19, 2008 with an interview with a special guest: psychology professor and author Kevin MacDonald.

Kevin MacDonald is a professor of psychology at California State University-Long Beach, best known for his use of evolutionary psychology to inform his study of Judaism as a “group evolutionary strategy”. MacDonald’s most controversial claim is his assertion that a suite of traits that he attributes to Jews, including higher-than-average intelligence and ethnocentricism, have been eugenically derived throughout history to enhance the ability of Jews to out-compete non-Jews for resources while undermining the power and self-confidence of the white majorities in Europe and America.
MacDonald was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and raised in a traditional Roman Catholic family. He entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison and became an activist in the anti-war movement from about 1965 to 1975. It was during this period that he came into contact with the East Coast Jewish background of the radical leftist movement then shaking the Establishment of America. Much later, during the 1990s, when he was formulating his idea of ethnic groups sustaining themselves with group evolutionary strategies, he began to reflect on his experiences during those days as an activist in “the movement”, in which he was in regular contact with an ethnic group that had relatively little history in the upper Midwest America of which he was a part. These reflections sparked his interest in Jewish intellectual and political movements.
MacDonald became a philosophy major and lost his radicalism. He embarked on a career as a Jazz pianist, but by the late 1970s had abandoned it in favor of academia. While in graduate school, he became attracted to E.O. Wilson’s theory of sociobiology.
MacDonald is also the author of seven books on evolutionary psychology and child development. He received his B.A. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1966, and M.S. in biology from the University of Connecticut in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in 1981 (Biobehavioral Sciences) from the University of Connecticut.
Since assuming his position at Cal State–Long Beach, his research has focused on developing evolutionary perspectives in developmental psychology and personality theory, the origins and maintenance of monogamous marriage in Western Europe, and ethnic relations (human group evolutionary strategies). He is the author of more than 100 scholarly papers and reviews.
The books MacDonald is most known for are his trilogy on Judaism: A People That Shall Dwell Alone, Separation and Its Discontents, and, his most popular and most controversial, The Culture of Critique. A collection of MacDonald’s essays in book form, Cultural Insurrections, has been published by The Occidental Press. I have posted the links to all of these books below.
